The Lockheed Super Constellation – better known as “Super Connie” – was the second model in the Lockheed Constellation range. Production was commenced in 1943. The “Super Connie” was the most successful model in the Constellation range, which also included the Starliner and the Constellation. Along with its competitor models the Douglas DC-6 and Douglas DC-7, it represented the zenith of piston technology for long-range aircraft. It was officially commissioned in December 1951 after completing its maiden flight on 13 October 1950. Used by numerous international airlines, a total of 579 of these aircraft were built between 1951 and 1958. Its stretched, elegant shape, four powerful engines and triple-tail design made the “Super Connie” one of the defining icons of aviation history.
