To mark "70 Years of Porsche Sports Cars", Schuco presents an Edition 1:18 version of the Porsche 550 Spyder, limited to just 777 copies worldwide. Based on the technical principles of the Porsche 356, the specialists in Porsche’s Racing department developed the 550 Spyder between 1952 and 1953, which was originally designed exclusively as a racing car. The type designation "550" actually refers to the vehicle’s kerb weight of 550 kilograms, which is incredibly low by modern-day standards. Wrapped in lightweight aluminium body panels, the sports car was powered by a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, air-cooled engine. The overall victory of Italian racing star Umberto Maglioli at the world famous Targa Florio in Sicily in 1956 represented the first big sporting achievement of the still relatively young Porsche brand and helped to cement its image as a lightweight, reliable and highly-efficient sports car. Not least due to the huge demand from many sports drivers and well-heeled Porsche enthusiasts in the USA, the 550 Spyder was soon approved for road use and could be purchased from Porsche dealers for 24,600 German marks. Today, examples in good condition fetch up to 4 million euros. Just like the other models of the Schuco Edition 1:18, the Porsche 550 A Spyder comes with many lovingly crafted details, such as opening and closing doors, a front opening hood and the opening bonnet under which the highly detailed replica of the "Fuhrmann engine" is accommodated.
