"With almost 65,000 units produced, the Unimog 404 is Unimog’s most successful model. Over 36,500
vehicles were purchased by the
Bundeswehr (German armed forces), where it was mainly used as an
all-terrain 1.5 tonne truck with a wide range of bodies and retrofit
kits. One of the most outstanding
features of the Unimog S was its off-road capability. The Unimog 404 also had an impressive 800
mm
fording capability. Daimler-Benz commenced production of the Unimog S in January 1956.
Most of the models sold to the Bundeswehr were
the basic version with a 3000 x 2000 mm flatbed and an open-top
cab with an all-weather folding top. However, there were also many
vehicles with box bodies."
