In these races, motor-sport-enthused private drivers were able to probe their driving skills and simultaneously push their mainly production-line sports cars to the limit, legally. The corresponding vehicle dealers also put on suitable transport vehicles in support of their customers‘ vehicles at race tracks like Laguna Seca, Eagle Mountain or Elkhart Lake. For example, Volkswagen and Porsche dealer „Continental Motors“ of Fort Lauderdale in Florida operated an elegant and remarkable vehicle-trailer combination, consisting of an original VW T1 tractor unit and the associated trailer. As of the Carrera Panamericana in 1952, Mercedes-Benz started to take part again in international racing events. In 1954, the Stuttgart-based company then re-entered the Grand Prix circus and was successful at its very first start at the French Grand Prix with a one-two victory by Juan Manuel Fangio and Karl Kling. In order to be able to transport the W196 and 300 SLR racing cars to the respective race tracks — along with the Mercedes-Benz racing division’s huge amount of equipment — a large racing division fleet was maintained. One of these special vehicles was the Mercedes-Benz O3500 on the basis of the O3500 omnibus, on which our Schuco model, at a scale of 1:43, is derived. In the early days of motor sport, from the beginning of the 20th century to well into the 1930’s, the majority of souped-up racing cars were still transported on their own four wheels from the factories to the famous racetracks of Le Mans, Monza, the Nürburgring or the infamous Targa Florio in Sicily. As the sport began to become professionalised, from about the middle of the 1930’s, the development of special transport vehicles, the so-called racing transporters, began. In the mid-1960’s, Porsche too had two transport vehicles based on the Mercedes-Benz O317 bus chassis built specifically for the needs of its racing division. The two racing transporters were used by the Porsche racing division until the 1980’s and, over the years, were also adapted several times to the design of the corresponding major sponsor. Due to their really quite box-like design, the Porsche racing transporters were soon somewhat mockingly called “furniture vans”. The white painted transporter of the MARTINI Porsche racing team on which our finely detailed Schuco model is based was used from the mid-seventies onwards and replaced its silvercoloured MARTINI Racing predecessor.   Attention ! First produced in 1968, the Tatra 148 only really took over from its predecessor, the Tatra 138, in 1972, when its production was stopped. The only externally evident difference was the slightly squarer design of the Tatra 148‘s typical rounded bonnet. Technically, the new model was fitted with a more powerful, 210-hp engine and the load capacity could be increased from 12 tonnes for the Tatra 138 to 15 tonnes for the Tatra 148. Like its predecessor, the Tatra 148 was delivered almost exclusively as a three-axle truck with all-wheel drive. Until production was stopped in 1982, a total of 113,647 Tatra 148s in all versions were built, which clearly demonstrates the technical quality and success of this Tatra model.   Attention !
